How to Enroll
Step 1 - Contact Us: Call our office at 703-670-5702 to discuss what you hope to achieve at Literacy Volunteers – PW. Our staff will guide you through the process and collect some basic applicant information (name, address, email, phone).
**No testing is required to enroll in our Conversation classes.**
Step 2 - Schedule Your Assessment: If you are enrolling in our ESL classes, you will be scheduled for an assessment to determine your reading, writing, speaking, and listening levels in English. You will be asked to fill out an application as part of your assessment.
*The assessment takes about 3 hours long and is offered by appointment Monday through Friday at our office: 2235C Tackett's Mill Drive, Woodbridge, VA 22192.
*There is a one-time $100 assessment fee; all classes are free.
Step 3 - Get Placed in the Right Class: After your assessment, our staff will review your results to find the best learning option for you:
*If your assessment shows that you can actively participate in and understand an ESL instructional class, you will be registered for a class (see schedule above for class schedules). You may choose the class that best fits your schedule.
*Should your assessment show that you are unable to understand the instruction offered in an ESL class, we can enroll you in a Conversation class where you will have the opportunity to improve your speaking and listening skills while building your vocabulary. Once you are ready to move up, we'll reassess you at no extra cost.
Step 4 - Lessons and Links: Once you are enrolled, we will send you everything you need to get started, including study materials and Zoom links (if applicable) for your classes.
Step 5 - Start Your Journey: ENJOY your learning experience with Literacy Volunteers – Prince William. It may be your first step to realizing a prosperous and rewarding life in the very communities in which you live.
Our Classes
At LVA-PW, we believe that learning opens doors. We offer a variety of free classes for adults, including ESL, Conversation, Health Literacy, Digital Literacy, Citizenship and more. Our classes are designed to help you gain confidence and improve your English, build practical skills, and stay informed about important topics like health and community resources.
You will have opportunities to improve your English by strengthening your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills while connecting with others in a supportive learning environment.
New classes are added throughout the year, so be sure to check back often for the latest opportunities. All of our classes are free for learners.
Conversation Classes: If you are just starting to learn and understand English, our Conversation Classes are the perfect place to begin. In these welcoming classes, you will practice speaking and listening, build your vocabulary, and discuss everyday topics that help you navigate daily life with confidence.
Conversation Classes are also a wonderful way to make friends and build community connections in a supportive environment. We offer both in-person and online classes to fit your schedule, and no testing is required to register—just sign up and start learning.
These classes provide a solid foundation for ESL classes, helping you gain the skills and confidence you need to continue your learning journey. All Conversation Classes are free for learners.
ESL Classes : If you already have basic English reading and writing skills and want to improve, our ESL classes are the next step. We offer Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced ESL classes designed to help adult learners strengthen their English for everyday life, work, and community engagement.
To ensure that each learner is placed in the class that best matches their skill level, we require a 3-hour English assessment before enrollment. This assessment measures your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills and is conducted at our office.
The assessment fee is $100, but all ESL classes are free for learners. Class placement is determined by your assessment results, ensuring you receive instruction that supports your continued growth and success.
Health Literacy: At LVA-PW, we want to help you feel confident using English in real-life health situations. We include health topics in all of our English classes so you can learn the language you need to take care of yourself and your family.
We also offer Health Literacy classes that focus on everyday healthcare topics. These classes give you the language and skills to understand health information and navigate the healthcare system with confidence.
You will learn how to:
-Make and prepare for medical appointments
-Understand medical forms and insurance information
-Talk with doctors and other healthcare providers
-Read and understand prescriptions
-Learn about nutrition and healthy living
-Get information about vaccinations
-Understand common health conditions like diabetes and strokes
Through these classes, you will build your English skills, gain useful health knowledge, and feel more comfortable in healthcare settings.
Computer Literacy: Our Computer Literacy classes help adults learn how to use computers and mobile phones with confidence. These classes are perfect for beginners or anyone who wants to improve their digital skills for everyday life, work, and learning.
You will learn how to:

-Send and receive emails
-Use web browsers and search for information online
-Navigate websites and use links
-Stay safe online and protect your privacy

Accent Reduction
This advanced ESL course helps adult learners reduce their accents to improve clarity and communication in English. Through targeted practice in pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, and stress, students develop more native-like speech patterns. The course includes individual practice, group activities, and real-life communication exercises.
Grammar Connection
Strengthen your English grammar skills with "Grammar Connections", a new class designed for adult English learners! This engaging and practical class will help you build a solid foundation in English grammar, boosting your confidence in speaking, writing, and understanding the language.
Through interactive lessons, group activities, and real-world examples, you'll gain the tools needed to communicate effectively in everyday situations. Our supportive instructors are dedicated to helping you succeed, whether you're a beginner or looking to improve your grammar skills.
Citizenship Classes
Citizenship classes are for our foreign-born learners who are wishing to become U.S. Citizens and have applied for citizenship. This course is designed to help them study for the civics and English test portions of the citizenship application process.
