All classes are at no charge to the Learners. Conversation Classes If you are just starting out to learn and understand English, our Conversation Class is a great place to begin. These classes will introduce you to the English language through day-to-day, “conversational” discussions. After you have come to better understand English in these classes, you will be ready to advance to ESL classes. Conversation classes are available to our Learners at no cost. ESL Classes (English as a Second Language) If you already have some basic English reading and writing skills, and your goal is to improve your skills, you should enroll in ESL class. Before you do, you must complete an assessment that measures your English reading-writing language skills. The assessment is conducted in our offices and is about 3-hours long. There is a $100 charge for the assessment. The ESL class itself is at no cost to Learners. Citizenship Classes Citizenship classes are for our foreign-born learners who are wishing to become U.S. Citizens and have applied for citizenship. This course is designed to help them study for the civics and English test portions of the citizenship application process. Health Literacy Healthcare is a complicated language within itself. That's why people with low health literacy pay 4X more money annually than the average person. This class will help bridge that gap. How to enroll Step 1: Call our office at 703-670-5702 to discuss what you hope to achieve at Literacy Volunteers of America – PW. Our staff will guide you through the process and collect some basic applicant information (name, address, email, phone). Step 2: If you are enrolling in the ESL program or any other program besides the Conversation Classes, you will be scheduled for an assessment. The assessment will evaluate your literacy skill level in reading and writing English. You will be asked to fill out an application as part of your assessment. You also will be required to pay a $100 assessment fee. Assessments are about 3 hours long and are only available Mondays through Fridays at our facility in Dale City: 4326 Dale Blvd., #6, Woodbridge, VA 22193. Step 3: Your assessment will be evaluated by our staff. If your assessment shows that you can actively participate in and understand an ESL instructional class, you will be registered for a class (see schedule above for class schedules). You may choose the class that best fits your schedule. Should your assessment show that you are unable to understand the instruction offered in an ESL class, we can enroll you in a Conversation Class. In time, after participating in a few Conversation classes, you will be ready for an ESL class. You will not have to pay an additional $100 fee even if you are re-assessed. Step 4: Once you are enrolled in a LVA-PW class, we will send you all the study materials required. This includes the Zoom links. Step 5: ENJOY your learning experience with Literacy Volunteers of America – Prince William. It may be your first step to realizing a prosperous and rewarding life in the very communities in which you live.
