These classes introduce you to the English language through everyday conversational discussions. Once you become more comfortable with English, you can advance to ESL classes. Before enrolling, you must complete a 3-hour assessment that measures your English reading and writing skills, conducted at our offices. The assessment costs $100, but the ESL class is free for learners. Health Literacy LVA-PW integrates health-related lessons into all its English-based educational classes. Health Literacy classes focus specifically on healthcare topics. Topics include: Making and preparing for medical appointments; Understanding medical forms and insurance information; Communicating effectively with your doctor; Understanding complex health information like prescriptions; Nutrition and healthy living; Vaccination awareness; Overview of chronic diseases like diabetes and strokes; etc. Computer Literacy Our basic computer literacy class teaches students how to use or improve their skills on computers and mobile phones. Topics include: Basic computer operating skills; Using word processing and typing; Email basics; Web browsers and search engines; Navigating websites and using hyperlinks; Computer safety and privacy; etc. Accent Reduction This advanced ESL course helps adult learners reduce their accents to improve clarity and communication in English. Through targeted practice in pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, and stress, students develop more native-like speech patterns. The course includes individual practice, group activities, and real-life communication exercises. Grammar Connection This beginner ESL course helps learners understand English grammar by building connections to grammar rules. The course enhances understanding and retention of English grammar concepts through clear explanations and practical examples. Citizenship Classes Citizenship classes are for our foreign-born learners who are wishing to become U.S. Citizens and have applied for citizenship. This course is designed to help them study for the civics and English test portions of the citizenship application process. How to Enroll Step 1: Call our office at 703-670-5702 to discuss what you hope to achieve at Literacy Volunteers – PW. Our staff will guide you through the process and collect some basic applicant information (name, address, email, phone). Step 2: If you are enrolling in the ESL program or any other program besides the Conversation Classes, you will be scheduled for an assessment. The assessment will evaluate your literacy skill level in reading and writing English. You will be asked to fill out an application as part of your assessment. You also will be required to pay a $100 assessment fee. Assessments are about 3 hours long and are only available Mondays through Fridays at our office in Woodbridge: 2235C Tackett's Mill Drive, Woodbridge, VA 22192. Step 3: Your assessment will be evaluated by our staff. If your assessment shows that you can actively participate in and understand an ESL instructional class, you will be registered for a class (see schedule above for class schedules). You may choose the class that best fits your schedule. Should your assessment show that you are unable to understand the instruction offered in an ESL class, we can enroll you in a Conversation Class. In time, after participating in a few Conversation classes, you will be ready for an ESL class. You will not have to pay an additional $100 fee even if you are re-assessed. Step 4: Once you are enrolled in a LVA-PW class, we will send you all the study materials required. This includes the Zoom links. Step 5: ENJOY your learning experience with Literacy Volunteers – Prince William. It may be your first step to realizing a prosperous and rewarding life in the very communities in which you live.
