Volunteer Opportunities

Becoming a tutor is simple and rewarding! Just follow these steps:

  1. Register

Complete the registration form on our website
OR call 703-670-7502 to request an application.

  1. Submit Your Application

Complete the tutor application in full before moving to the next step.

  1. Observe a Class

Participate in two shadowing experiences:

  • One ESL class
  • One Conversation class
    (We recommend one in-person and one on Zoom.)
  1. Complete Online Training

You will receive a link to complete required tutor training through ProLiteracy.
Create a free membership account and complete the assigned modules, which include:

  • Lesson planning
  • Teaching conversations
  • Reading and writing instruction
  1. Attend Orientation

Attend an in-person orientation at the LVA-PW office. You’ll receive additional resources and important program information.

Help an Adult Reach Their Goals

Volunteer tutors provide one-on-one or small group instruction tailored to each learner’s objectives. No prior teaching experience is required. Structured training ensures you feel prepared and confident.
